The MELD score on hospital admission was calculated retrospectively. From January 2012 through December 2013, all consecutive inpatients aged 18 years were eligible for the study patients with missing MELD parameters on hospital admission and/or treatments influencing the international normalized ratio, that is, novel oral anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonists, were excluded. We performed a retrospective observational study at a tertiary referral center. The laboratory-based model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score reflects the function of the kidney, liver, and extrinsic coagulation pathway and might be used as a general prognostic tool for the assessment of patients. How to Search Douglas Dispatch Obituary Archives When an elderly man needs a chair at the packed Panera, Berk grabs one for him. The irony is that Berk comes across like an inveterate people-pleaser. Somehow, this self-described “weather nut” has touched a nerve, becoming one of Baltimore’s most divisive media figures. And though he has won several “Best of” awards from local media (including Baltimore in 2000, 2006, and 2007), he has also taken plenty of hits for his denial of man-made climate change and his thin-skinned reactions to criticism. A parody Twitter account ( regularly mocks his forecasting skills, his catch phrases (“Faith in the Flakes,” “stickage,” et al.), and his general persona. But since heading online-only in 2012, his following has, well, snowballed, and he now reaches about 1 million people a week on Facebook alone, and up to 5 million during storms.īut he has accumulated a small, vocal contingent of detractors, as well. Almost certainly, a portion of his audience followed him over from his Baltimore TV gigs, first at WBAL from 1997 to 2003 and then at WMAR from 2003 to 2012. With more than 200,000 followers on Facebook, nearly 30,000 on Twitter, and as many as hundreds of thousands of daily visitors to his website,, Berk’s populist touch can’t be denied. “Now how do you that without putting people to sleep?” he asks, his eyes alight with all the delight of a kid on a snow day. “This is where it’s going to start as rain and go to heavy snow, probably a couple inches of accumulation, then to rain, then into snow tomorrow,” he says, pointing to the pink smear on the map engulfing the greater Baltimore region. Look,” he continues, turning his computer to reveal a radar map. I hate to be rude,” he says in his rapid-fire patois that still retains a hint of his native “New Yawk” accent. Suddenly, snow that was scheduled for the following day might arrive as early as this afternoon, and Berk, the meteorologist of choice for many Baltimoreans, is worried about missing a chance to update his legion of social media followers on the latest projections. A storm system is headed for Maryland and is moving in faster than anticipated. His preoccupation, as always, is the weather. Though he’s being interviewed in the back of a Timonium Panera Bread, he keeps stealing glances at his MacBook Pro and his iPhone, which lies on the table buzzing and ringing frequently. Note: It will be cold enough for stickage eventually.Justin Berk is distracted. This is where there may be snow falling and not all sticking. Changeover: Southern Maryland to the Beaches will start with rain and then transition to heavy snow during the morning. There could be some impact there, but a sharp cutoff of the snow, then the band will retreat to the south. The northern edge will try to sneak in to southern PA for just a few hours of the morning commute….The ‘Pay Attention’ region may be included in A Winter Weather Advisory. The real prize, in my opinion, is the built-in 50′ laser distance measurer (accurate to 1/4” in 50′). Everything’s Better With Lasers – The LTM1 Aims To Please Taking measurements with the laser feature is as easy as pressing the red button. And depending on how rough you are, it has a fairly solid standout of at least 65”. The one foot intervals are clearly marked and – for those of you framing walls – the tape has distinct markings every 16”. The tape is numerically labeled in both inches and 1/8″ fractions and includes tick marks for 16ths and 32nds. The 16′ x 3/4” measuring tape works just like any other pull it out and take your measurement. The LTM1 2-In-1 Laser Tape Measure by General Tools has proven to be rather handy. 2-In-1 Laser Tape Measure Model LTM1 – General’s Command The LTM1 has a nice wide metal belt clip. It shouldn’t take us any longer than, say, 50 feet or so. They sent us one to check out so let’s take a quick look at the LTM1 2-In-1 Laser Tape Measure. But why choose one or the other when you can be extra fancy and have both?! General Tools just released a 2-in-1 measuring tool combining a 16′ tape and 50′ laser in a single package the size of a standard tape measure. After all, how else can one verify the $5 sub he just bought is really a foot long? For greater spans you may prefer the convenience of a laser distance measurer. Whether you’re a tradesman, DIYer or just a Human, you likely find yourself reaching for the old ticked stick every now and then. The “rule” of thumb is that everyone should own a tape measure or ten. Time slows down, you don't look at your watch, and it is ALWAYS 5pm at this bar! This is what it feels like to be in the keys. Imagine being able to sit on a beautiful dock on the ocean, surrounded by sunshine, a warm breeze, the occasional friendly bar dog, and palm trees. All drinks cost about $6, are served in SMALL plastic cups, and are poured very strong. These people are like permanent fixtures in the bar. The local patrons literally live at this bar and you will see the same 6 scruffy, old, sea-worn men and women sitting at the bar, grumbling about this and that, drinking, laughing, etc. The moment you step foot in this place you know you are in the keys and you know that you are definitely an outsider (although you are not made to purposely feel this way). When you enter the bar it is very dark, smoky-smelling, dingy (in typical dive bar fashion), with a small bar in the middle, with a back door opening out to a dock facing nothing but ocean. From the highway you will see the ginormous Caribbean Club sign and the unassuming exterior facade of a local dive bar. It doesn't get more authentically "key'ish" than the Caribbean Club. This place is like the proverbial "Cheers" of the keys.where everybody knows your name (if you are a local that is). But read on and see if you think this place might be for YOU. Ok.first off.the Caribbean Club might not be for everyone. It's definitely not a tourist-trap kind of spot, but if you want to check out a local's authentic bar, with some memorabilia, leave your ego in the car, put your best smile on, get ready to meet some characters, and head for the Caribbean Club! The pictures of Bogey and Bacall and the Key Largo scenes on the wall are pretty cool, but to be honest, I didn't spend a ton of time looking at them. No one harassed us, no one served us crappy drinks (Kathy the bartender was on duty, and very efficient.) The locals got smiles and conversation, we got a quick sing-along and dance with the locals and awesome sunset. We ordered a couple of rum and cokes, ($10 for both, and they were strong) and went out the back, snagged a table for the sunset view, which was EXCELLENT, and just chilled for an hour watching the sailboats, powerboats and jet-skis cruise by. One guy saw me singing along to the jukebox, and joined in for a few minutes. A couple of the locals checked us out and then went back to whatever they had been doing. Who brings a mean dog to a bar?" That started off a great conversation, and after that, we walked right in. We asked if we could pet the dogs and if they were friendly, and they said, "Of course. Two of the locals were sitting in the doorway, with one dog each, standing in front of the door. My wife and I definitely don't look like locals, and driving a fancy convertible, we DEFINITELY didn't look like locals. I actually decided we were not going to go, drove past the place, turned around 5 minutes later and went back because, what's going to happen? I get yelled at, get in a fight, and we leave? I was taken aback by the number of reviews giving the place 1 or 2 stars, and voicing concerns about the reception they received by the patrons, or the way they were treated. I had looked at TripAdvisor when we were in Key West, because I knew I wanted to stop at the "Key Largo" bar on our trip up the Keys.
